Social skills groups consist of 3- 5 children and meet one hour a week for ten weeks. The groups take place either at the STEPS office or out in the community. STEPS groups are formed based on children’s similar interests, age, language level, and availability.

The focus of our groups is on promoting positive and appropriate social interactions by providing opportunities to learn through direct instruction and engaging activities. Groups incorporate children’s interests and use a variety of ABA teaching strategies. Session structure is similar to the following:

  • opening activity
  • teaching a skill
  • practicing the skill in structured settings
  • performing the skill within a fun activity
  • closing discussion
